Guided Fly Fishing

The Superior Fly Angler and Namebini specialize in custom planning a trip to suit your individual fly fishing goals.

In each full day of guided fly fishing, we include a filling, personalized lunch, snacks, and transportation from the Duluth-Two Harbors area. Whether your trip will be your first time casting a fly rod, or if you’re looking to learn the finer points of casting, mending or fly presentation, we’ll tailor your trip just for you.  We also enjoy highlighting our local wildlife, natural history, ecology, and geology.  Photos of your experience are provided via e-mail at no additional charge.

Brule River Migratory Fish

Wild Fish Spring and Fall

The Bois Brule is a storied and famous river located in northern Wisconsin, roughly 45 minutes from Duluth, MN. Spring and Fall trips are available.  Wild steelhead fill the river in spring, offering our earliest trips, from April through early May.  Migratory brown trout, salmon and steelhead offer great fishing from September through Mid November.  Our migratory trips explore the lower river from US Hwy 2 north to Lake Superior.  All Bois Brule migratory trips are walk-wade.

North Shore Wild Steelhead

April-May

We guide over a dozen rivers from Duluth to Canada. Trip destinations are tentatively scheduled but we prefer to be nimble and able to choose rivers that are hot on any given day. Wild steelhead are entirely catch-and-release on the North Shore so our fish are able to grow to impressive sizes.  All North Shore steelhead trips are walk-wade.

Summertime

Fly fishing for wild brook trout beneath towering waterfalls and through deep canyons is a unique way to experience the North Shore. Resident brook trout are an excellent option for those learning to fly fish, looking to explore the wilderness or wanting to fine-tune technique. Easy access and more challenging trips are available.  We offer these trips from the end of May through the the end of September.  All North Shore trout trips are walk-wade.

Upper Brule River Float Trip

Explore a Historic River

Explore the upper spring creek waters of the Brule via guided canoe! During the summer, we float the river the same way that it has been guided for the past 140 years to target wild brook, brown and rainbow trout. From streamer fishing to epic dry fly hatches, the upper Bois Brule is a river of many opportunities, best experienced from our custom Canadian fly fishing canoe.  Limited to 2 people

Drift Boat Trips

Smallmouth & Pike

We run the rapids of northern Minnesota rivers via custom drift boat. Smallmouth bass, northern pike and the occasional muskie or walleye are the quarry. Using larger rods to cast topwater flies and streamers, this is great way to hit the water in the heat of the summer.  This is a warm-weather trip option and we guide rivers such as the St. Louis and Cloquet from June through September.  Limited to 2 people.

Fly Casting Lessons

Available on a Per Hour Basis

Want to learn to fly cast or fine-tune your casting technique? Spend some time outside working on everything from basic overhead casting, roll casting or even advanced double hauling for that trip to the Bahamas. $40/hour/person.

Head Guide Carl Haensel

Carl Haensel is an educator, biologist, photographer, writer and fishing guide. He has guided and taught fly fishing since 1996 and has authored dozens of articles on fly fishing techniques, tips, flies and locations as well as children’s educational literature. From 1996 until 2003 he owned and operated Around the Bend Fly Fishing based in Eden Prairie, MN. From 2001 to 2007 he served as a regional manager for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Fish and Boat Commission. There he managed education, programming and aquatic resource issues. He has fished extensively throughout North America and the Caribbean and his photo have been widely published. He has owned and operated his guide service, Namebini, since 2007 and offers trips throughout the northland.
